Appreciation Society: an introduction

in·fat·u·a·tion [in-fach-oo-ey-shuhn], nounfoolish or all-absorbing passion
Examples: stamp collecting, stalkers, and most importantly:
fangirls.

Every girl (and even some boys) have had some moment in their life being a fangirl(boy), and if you haven't yet- don't worry it'll come. I remember a few years ago I was a huuuuge Queen/Beatles fangirl, and it was pretty bad. I'd only listen to those two bands (which isn't bad at all really) and I would talk about the members 24/7. Whether it was their adorable haircuts in 1965 or the song they totally wrote for me in a past life- I would not shut up about these guys. I had posters, t-shirts, buttons, records, books, dvds, cds, and basically anything else you could think of (I still have some stuff, but on a smaller scale). Now that I've grown a little I've come to realize that it's unhealthy to obsess over one thing (even though I still kind of do it) and I just like a bunch of stuff so I feel like I'm not really a fangirl but more of a fellow musician/admirer. What people don't realize is that they are many types of fangirls.

Type: The Beatle fan
Qualifications: She/he is merely infatuated to a wild extent with getting everything with her obsession's face on it, squeals every time she sees her favorite member, very protective of their favorite member, and tends to think every song is written for them.
Age: early to late teens
Then: Started in the 1960s with the Beatles, Herman's Hermits, The Monkees
Now: Justin Bieber, One Directions, Jonas Brothers

Type: The Screamer (literally)
Qualifications: Normally doesn't know the words to the songs, because they're too busy screaming their heads off, makes it hard to hear at concerts (or movies), can also be a Beatle Fan, an emotional wreck
Age: teeny boppers (10 - 13 years old)
Then: it didn't matter what band it was, they just screamed every time they saw them
Now: see 'then' above

Type: The Speechless (once again: literally)
Qualifications: mouth is wide open, eyes wide, sometimes crying is involved, they don't make a sound, do they even breathe?
Age: anywhere from early teens to young adult
Then: people at music festivals (Monterey Pop 1967, Woodstock), the crowd on the Ed Sullivan Show, liked The Who, The Beatles, Donovan, The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Now: Lady Gaga, Adele (i'm not too sure about anyone else)

"mouth is wide open, eyes wide..."

Type: The Dedicated
Qualifications: most likely president or part of a fan club based organization, gets other fans to send them letters to give to bands, has every album, knows all the songs, who played/sang/wrote what song, even appreciates the bad album (every band has one), goes to every concert when the band comes to town, tries to get back stage
Age: 15+
Then: Kim MacAfee (Bye Bye Birdie), Riff Randell, fan club member
Now: I honestly don't know of any. Are there even fan club organizations around anymore?
